Mat Removal

Does your cat have clumps or tangles? If so, this is referred to as matting. Mats spell trouble and pain for any feline. It's important to have them carefully removed as soon as possible, as the matting will continue to spread and become worse—causing your feline unnecessary stress, pain, and scarring. If you need relief for your matted cat, Purr-fection Salon can help. I offer cat de-matting/pelt removal services in Northfield, MN, and surrounding areas. Once removed, I will work with you to establish a maintenance program for your feline to prevent further matting.

More About Mats

Surprisingly, mats aren't just made from fur. Mats include a combination of fur and other materials that lead to furry clumps on a cat. If left unresolved, the cat's fur can become pelted, which is extremely painful and very dangerous to the cat's well-being. Pelting is a severe form of matting that occurs when mats intertwine and take up a large surface area on the cats body. Mats decrease blood circulation to the skin which can cause permanent scarring and hair follicle damage. Mats can also cause sores and skin conditions due to excessive licking, entrapment of moisture, feces, and urine that can cause bacterial and fungal infections to the skin.

Please note that de-matting should only be done by a professional. NEVER use a scissor to try and remove a mat yourself! Often times there is a fold of skin within the clump/mat and it’s only a matter of time before the cat is cut. A cat's skin is extremely delicate and thin, making it easily susceptible to extreme damage. Even a small cut from a scissor can result in an emergency vet visit!
